Driveway Drainage, Rut Problems

Problems with driveways normally happen over a period of time.  One of the main causes of driveway issues would be incorrect drainage. There are several things that can lead to drainage problems and how they can have a negative impact on driveways.  One of these would be the drainage ditches not operating correctly and allowing the water to flow away and out of the driveway. Keeping the ditches shaped and clean out is important to making sure the water flows away and into the bigger drainage areas near the main road, The ditches can become clogged in certain areas and skip or re-direct water back onto the driveway, causing wash outs throughout the driveway areas. Another problem would be the grade of the driveway. Where possible, there needs to be areas in driveway that should be graded or sloped to allow water to flow away and into the drainage ditch areas. This helps keep water away and off the driveways, which is always better.  

Another thing to look at would be the areas of property that join up to the driveway. Sometimes the land could create a slope or funnel that sends water directly onto the driveway. If possible, try to make corrections in these areas by diverting water into drainage areas and away from the driveway. 

Many times driveways with steeper hill areas can create a challenge with water drainage issues. There would need to be attention focused on these areas and ways to create better water drainage into the ditches. 

Another problem would be delivery trucks. This tends to create more wear and tear on both driveways and road areas, especially with the weight and size of the trucks. The drivers are normally in a hurry to deliver packages and spin tires, creating ruts or bad spots that get worse over time.  This is normally worse on hill areas, because the drivers feel they need to accelerate in these areas. Without the correct drainage in these areas and the driveway staying wet, it will cause the driveway to get worse over time.
